A quick mention for the Lorelei, around the corner on Carlisle St, adequate pizzas and you could BYOB. Absolutely everything about it felt like you were in the 1950s
Many an evening started in the Pollo surrounded by Australian backpackers and others wanting a cheap meal before going on the town. Yes I remember the zabaglione .. and the Vongole.. the carbonara was worth a mention as well. I wonder if you remember the Three Lanterns opposite the Stockpot in Panton St? Did squares of steak pie school dinner style.
I remember being DISGUSTED when my sophisticated friend told me what was in the spag vongole he habitually had in there to soak up our after-work four pints in The Cambridge. Oh how palates evolve (mercifully).
I’ve been worrying about that too. Did they use vongole in jars… the pressure-cooked ones in brine? They surely didn’t have frozen ones imported in the 80s and the possibility of live ‘fresh’ ones would have been terrifying.
Wow , I remember the Pollo Bar very well , along with Jimmys the Greek restaurant and the Stockpot in Soho. Happy days before I knew what burrata was . A great trip down memory lane , thank you .

Absolutely love zabaglione.... Sadly, rarely seen on menus in our part of middle Italy.
Going to try it tomorrow
