It's a brilliant song, jaunty and menacing at once. I read somewhere years ago, Steely Dan ( and I include DF) sound like New York if you're in LA, and vice versa. You can listen a hundred times and hear something new.
Ross McDonald is not bad, but try Donald E Westlake, particularly the Parker novels he wrote under the nom de plume Richard Stark.
As to Fagen, as a solo artist, his masterpiece is IGY, about the future we were promised, but which - fortunately - never arrived. But as half of Steely Dan, the best story song is “Kid Charlemagne”
