My grandmother took the Twentieth Century Limited twice a year on the way to and from college! Local train from Poughkeepsie to Grand Central, then the Twentieth Century Limited to Chicago, then the City of San Francisco all the way across the West to Oakland. The glamour!
God... can you imagine. It must have been unbelievably gorgeous. Was that the route 'across country'? Via Chicago?
Now I have to start tracking the Chatanooga Choo Choo, the 3.10 to Yuma, the Midnight Train To Georgia, "The Atchison, Topeka and The Santa Fe" and quite possibly The Last Train to Clarksville.

And the last train to San Fernando? (‘If you miss this one you’ll never get another one’)
"Biddy biddy bum bum...!"
